National Dark Sky Week 2009 Each year for the last 5 years, dark sky advocates across the U.S. have marked the observance of National Dark Sky Week. The week long event is purposely scheduled to coincide with the April new moon (the nights when no moon is visible) and encourages people to head outside after dark and enjoy views of the night sky. Along with gaining an appreciation for the wonders of the night, event organizers hope to raise public awareness of the growing problem of light pollution. Light pollution is a blanket of light which envelopes our communities and prevents most of us from seeing more than a handful of stars in the night sky. Besides preventing stargazers from enjoying views of the heavens, light pollution also wastes significant natural resources. NDSW organizers also hope to promote the use of quality outdoor lighting systems that limit their light output to the ground beneath them. National Dark Sky Week 2009 will occur the week of April 20 to April 26. To participate, all you need to do is turn of all non-essential outdoor lighting and head outside after dark.
